Swinging from Dodger Stadium's Upper Deck: A Golfing Adventure

Upper Deck Dodger Stadium.
Upper Deck Dodger Stadium.

This weekend gifted me an extraordinary golfing escapade, and guess where? Inside the illustrious Dodger Stadium! Upper Deck Golf took the concept of Top Golf and catapulted it to a whole new echelon by transforming Dodger Stadium into a golfing haven. Picture this: instead of merely launching golf balls off the top deck (which, let's be honest, would be pretty epic), they devised a game that navigates players through 9 diverse tee boxes scattered all around the stadium, with holes cleverly positioned in the outfield.

Scoring Rules
My golf game next to the scoring rules.

Let's break down the rules of this innovative game:

  1. A 9-hole course awaits.

  2. Each player gets 2 shots per hole.

  3. Record your best score per hole.

  4. Scoring criteria:

  • Hole in one (1)

  • Birdie (2) - Inside the white circle

  • Par (3) - On the green

  • Bogey (4) - Off the green

Our tee time was set for a delightful 10:40 AM, so we sauntered in an hour early, indulging in a delectable breakfast at the Stadium Club Bar within Dodger Stadium. I opted for a scrumptious breakfast sandwich while others sipped on a refreshing drink or two. While waiting, we took a swing at the long drive competition and dabbled in the putting game they had set up.

Prior to the event, I did a bit of reconnaissance: you could either tote your own clubs or utilize the ones provided. Carrying my own set across the stadium didn't seem appealing, but plenty of folks opted to do so. However, if you chose to bring your clubs, they limited you to PW - 8 iron. No drivers allowed, perhaps to prevent any 'home run' shots.

Teeing off!
1st hole

At the starting line, we received a bag of 18 balls, with the option to purchase mulligans at a steep $10 per ball. The first hole, situated in right field on the lower deck, spanned 63 yards, and the clubs provided were 56 and PW. With a Cleveland 56, my second shot landed me on the green, securing my first par of the day. Moving on to the second hole in center field at 57 yards, I stuck with the Cleveland 56 and scored another Par.

The game kept evolving with the third hole, an 85-yard challenge that elevated us to the next level. Opting for a Cobra PW, the only available club in our bay, I encountered the surprising lightness of the clubs, leading to a few shots sailing into bogey territory. However, a revelation struck on the 6th hole as I wielded the Nike Victory Red 9 iron – hitting straight shots no matter how forcefully I swung. This translated into two more pars on holes 6 and 7.

Things took a turn for the better on the 8th hole; still using the Nike 9 iron, I landed a birdie. And the final hole, perched atop the upper deck above home plate, stood at a challenging 120 yards, right down the center past 2nd base. Employing the Nike 9 iron, my initial shot was a birdie, affording me an extra swing. Though the second shot nearly replicated the birdie, it rolled off the back of the green. The final tally? A score of 28, just one over par, leaving me beaming with satisfaction.

Going for the white pin.

This wasn't just about the score, though. The weather played its part beautifully: 73 degrees, clear skies, with a gentle breeze. And guess what? Upper Deck Golf tours stadiums nationwide. Trust me, it's an experience worth exploring.
