Step 2: The Book!

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

In my quest to unlock the secrets of a better golf game, I started where any self-respecting scholar of the fairways would begin: I turned to the almighty oracle, Google. It was there that I stumbled upon "Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf," a succinct 109-page manual that promised to be my guiding light. Frankly, when I gazed at my own golf swing, I knew I could use all the help I could get.

But who was this Ben Hogan fellow, you might ask? Well, William Ben Hogan, an American professional golfer, earned his stripes as one of the all-time greats in the sport's annals. Renowned for his profound contributions to golf swing theory and his masterful ball-striking prowess, he's a name that echoes through the halls of golfing history (and of course, Wikipedia).

Armed with this newfound knowledge about Mr. Hogan, I decided this was the ideal place to embark on my journey toward golfing excellence. The starting point? My grip. It dawned on me that I had been swinging my clubs with an iron-fisted grasp, not really understanding the delicate art of club handling. Should I squeeze that club with all my might, or should it be more of a gentle caress?

Chapter 1 of Mr. Hogan's guide lays out the fundamentals of grip, offering precious insights and practical tips on how to practice this essential skill. This was just the ticket for someone like me, who can't hit the links every day. I began to embrace a softer, finger-focused grip, and I can already see the improvements in my swing and the sweet connection with the ball.

Stay tuned for the next thrilling chapter of my golfing odyssey!
